Choose Your Route

By car, there are three main routes to get to the Ardnamurchan Peninsula by (two involve crossing lochs, and the other is entirely by road). Route descriptions assume that you are travelling from the south, passing through Crianlarich and taking the A82 – the most direct route north-west. If you need directions from elsewhere, please get in touch and we’ll happily help.

From Crianlarich travel through lovely Stirlingshire to the village of Tyndrum, an ideal place to refuel and use the facilities.

Via Glencoe and the Corran Ferry

The most direct route is to travel north from Tyndrum, across the remote and wild Rannoch Moor, and through the awesome mountains of Glencoe towards Fort William. Nine miles south of Fort William is Corran. From there you catch the ferry, a short five minute ride across the narrow straits of Loch Linnhe. Leave the ferry and turn left along the A861 toward Salen. You can find the Corran ferry timetable here.

From Salen turn left onto the B8007 and head west along the shores of Loch Sunart, which is lined by beautiful ancient oak woodlands. After about seven miles you will pass the historic Glenborrodale Castle, the newly built Ardnamurchan Distillery and Ardnamurchan Natural History Visitor Centre. The road takes you further along the coast before heading inland for a few miles past Ben Hiant on your left. You can then turn right towards the beaches of Achateny, Swordle Bay and Fascadale or carry straight on down towards the charming village of Kilchoan, and the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, the most westerly point on the British mainland.

Via Glencoe, Fort William and Glenfinnan

If you decide to visit Fort William, you may choose to visit us via the more northerly route, heading west towards Mallaig. This road passes through Glenfinnan, where you can visit a monument raised to mark the place where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at the beginning of the 1745 Jacobite Rising. You’ll also see the impressive railway viaduct (yes, the same one from the Harry Potter films!).

Continue north through the glens until Lochailort where you turn left onto the A861, signposted for Salen. From here travel along the coast with spectacular views out towards the Small Isles (Rum, Eigg, and Muck) and then down towards Salen.

From Salen turn right onto the B8007 and head west along the shores of Loch Sunart and its ancient oak woodlands. Via Oban and the Isle of Mull

Half a mile after Tyndrum you may choose to head west towards Oban, “Gateway to the Isles”. From here you can catch a ferry to the Isle of Mull (booking is essential). On arrival turn right and drive north through Mull to the colourful town of Tobermory. From there, catch the ferry (no booking required) to Kilchoan, the western gateway to the Ardnamurchan peninsula. You can find all ferry timetables here.
