Ardnamurchan Estate – Fishing Permit Information
Due to environmental concerns and the impacts of climate change on trout populations in the Ardnamurchan Estate hill lochs, new regulations apply from 25 March 2016.
All persons fishing Estate waters must hold an appropriate permit.
1. Free Permits for Permanent Residents
Permanent residents living within the West Ardnamurchan Community Council area may apply for free permits to fish the following lochs:
- Loch Mudle
- Loch Mhadaidh Riadhaich
- Loch na Carriage
2. Loch-Specific Rules
Loch Mudle
- Bag limit: 8 trout per rod per day
- Only trout under 10 inches (25 cm) may be kept
- All salmon must be released
Loch Mhadaidh Riadhaich
- Only trout under 10 inches (25 cm) may be kept
- All salmon must be released
Loch na Carriage
- Bag limit: 8 trout per rod per day
- Only trout under 10 inches (25 cm) may be kept
- All salmon must be released
3. Fishing Method
- Fly-fishing only at all times
4. Permits for All Other Lochs
Permits for the remaining Estate lochs are available to both residents and visitors:

5. Area Closures
- The Swordle Lochs are currently closed due to forestry operations.
6. River Achateny – Conservation Closure
Marine Scotland has designated the River Achateny as Category 3 (poor).
For conservation reasons, all fishing on the River Achateny is banned until further notice, and the river is classified as a conservation zone.
