Braehouse Cottage

This is the characteristic traditional Highland cottage, nestled into the hillside, overlooking the vista of islands to the north.  The cottage has recently been refurbished and now sleeps two in a double room, ideal for a couple looking for a romantic retreat for two.

The elevated position is great for spotting wildlife. From the garden you can watch deer in the surrounding parks. Wake early in summer and you will see hinds with their spotted young. In autumn, from this cottage especially, you will hear the roar of rutting stags as they gather and defend their harem of females.

The enclosed garden has a picnic bench where you can dine in warmer weather, and there is a sun porch where you can sit in comfort and admire glowing sunsets. In summer it is late before the sun finally sinks behind the island hills, and at mid-summer it scarcely becomes dark, and you can track the progress of the sun just below the horizon.

The kitchen has cooker, microwave, washing machine and fridge with freezing compartment and the living room has freesat television. For the ultimate relaxation after those long walks, the bathroom has a jacuzzi bath.

Branault House

The original croft house, the sense of tradition here is strong. The two stone byres adjacent to the house are still in use, and in spring time children love seeing newborn lambs play in the surrounding fields.

The house has a large enclosed garden where children and pets can play safely, and it's a short walk to the beautiful white sands of Kilmory beach. The surrounding hills are also ideal for walking. After so much fresh air and exercise you will probably want to curl up in front of the log fire - the living room also has satellite television. Upstairs there is one twin and one double room, and a bathroom with shower and bath. The kitchen has a microwave as well as cooker and a washing machine and fridge-freezer.

Bring binoculars if you enjoy watching birds and wildlife, not only are you likely to see otters on your trips to the beach, but you can often see deer close by. Birds of prey are regularly observed hunting over the expanse of fields and hillside in front of the house.

Fascadale Lodge

Built on the ruins of a 15th Century shepherds cottage, the house overlooks Fascadale bay and has a panoramic view of the islands to the north and mountain ranges to the east. The patio is a suntrap and from here you can watch birds or scan for sharks, dolphins and whales out to sea, or just close your eyes and soak up the sounds and scents of the coast.

The nearby woodland is a haven for birds and you are likely to see buzzards, kestrels, sparrowhawks and possibly eagles hunting here and over neighbouring moorland. From this point there are lengthy hill or coastal walks, after which a spell in the sauna or in front of the fire might be in order.

The house has two double bedrooms, 1 en-suite and the 2 twin rooms. In the kitchen there is a cooker, microwave, washing machine and dishwasher as well as fridge-freezer. The lounge has a television and dvd.

Fascadale Cottage

The cottage is built right on the coast on the ruin of a netsman's bothy. The view to the mountains of Eigg, Muck, Rum and the Cuillins of Skye is spectacular as are the green and turquoise waters of Fascadale bay.

The bay itself is stunning. Banks of rounded stones, cast up by countless storms, line the shore. At low tide a beach of pale sand is exposed, which gives the waters their colour. This is where the boats landed their catch, to be stored in the ice house, which remains to this day.

In summer you can watch the sun setting behind the islands and listen to the gentle swell of water - or in the winter months enjoy crashing waves, swirling spindrift and the crackle of the woodburning stove.

The cottage has two twin rooms and one double, all of which have en-suite bathrooms. The kitchen has cooker, microwave, washing machine and dishwasher and fridge-freezer.

Achateny House

This was the "big house" for Achateny Farm.

The house has views northwards across the sea to the islands of Skye, Eigg, Rum and Muck. The garden attracts many songbirds, which in turn have attracted a pair of sparrowhawks which regularly create havoc overhead. To the west deer graze the open ground overnight, returning to the hills in the early morning.

Achateny beach is a couple of minutes walk away down a rough private track. Otters are often seen fishing among the reefs here, and the apparently deserted beach is alive with birds. There is a large tidal range, and at low tide huge areas of white sand are uncovered and fascinating rock pools form among the rocky outcrops. The adjoining Kilmory beach is just as lovely and more sheltered from the wind, both are protected by reefs which mean the waves here are more gentle than further west on the peninsula.

There is a large enclosed garden where children and dogs (and adults) can safely play. Indoors there is a conservatory, a dining room, a large lounge (with television and DVD) and a large kitchen-dining room. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms, both en-suite, and two twin bedrooms. The third bathroom has a Jacuzzi bath and sauna. There is an additional toilet on the landing. The kitchen has cooker, microwave, fridge-freezer and washing machine and dishwasher.

Achateny Cottage

Words don't do this cottage justice, but the photos speak for themselves - it is very picturesque and has an incredible outlook to the islands of Eigg, Rum and Skye. This was originally the farmhouse for Achateny farm, with a tiny one-room bothy on the end where the shepherd lived.

Now the cottage has one double room, one twin and one room with bunk-beds, two bathrooms, and the kitchen has cooker, microwave, fridge with freezing compartment and washing machine and dishwasher.

In the evening watch the sun set from the sun porch and deer make their way to the coast to graze - you will find their hoofprints on the beach in the morning, alongside the tracks of otters and the prints of seasbirds. The white sand beach is only a short walk away, and is one of the most beautiful on the peninsula.

There is plenty of living and sleeping space here for large families or groups. In total there are five bedrooms, three double and two twin, all of which are en-suite. Although advertised as sleeping ten, one of the double rooms has a single sofa-bed - ideal as a family room - and the small upstairs lounge also has a double sofa-bed.

The kitchen has cooker, microwave, washing machine and dishwasher and fridge-freezer. There are two additional toilets by the entrance.

A five minute walk along the private road takes you to the white sands of Swordle beach. Mid-summer sunset here is breath-taking, when the sun finally sinks behind the Cuillins of Rum late at night it remains just below the horizon until daybreak. In winter the byre is a cosy retreat after bracing walks along the rugged coast or surrounding hills.

Swordle Byre is available from Sunday to Sunday.

The beach is just in front of the house and children while away the hours making sandcastles, exploring pools and paddling. As the beach is secluded, at the end of a private road, it's also great for sunbathing, swimming, boating and bbqs.
